Support Teen Lit Day

You think you are alone until you find books about girls like you.”
- Roxane Gay on The Rumpus.net

In honor of Support Teen Lit Day, I am excited to present you with a post about one of my favorite books of all time- young adult or otherwise- The Outsiders! Think of your favorite books growing up, and how they shaped your childhood and who you are today. To put it simply, books are important. Being a kid is tough stuff, and without the safe haven of books, I would not be the nerd you know today! So without further ado, I present to you my style icon: The Greasers from The Outsiders!

The girls for me, they aren’t bad girls, per se. But they’re tough broads, loud mouths, and maybe a little too cool for school. Sorry mom, but take it up with S.E. Hinton!
I idolized these tough cookies, ready to stand up for themselves and their friends, all from the safety of my palace- the library.
Start with the shoes (drr?) Red suede, 60s-style platforms are perfect for my rockabilly vibe. I top it off with some beat up jeans, a white tee (optional: rolling up the sleeves with your cigs concealed inside) and a tough-as-nails leather jacket, probably borrowed from the old ball and chain. Additional kick-accents include: big brass earrings, rockin’ bag, cherry red lips, and winged black eyeliner. All the better to cut class with, my dear*.

(Shoes: Biviel BV3665, Earrings: Betsy + Iya, Bag: “Ian” from Jeffrey Campbell’s appropriately-titled purse line “Girls We Hated In High School.”)

*Don’t cut class! Stay in school!

Randy, baby

New spring shoes are already starting to trickle in at Manifesto, and this is my favorite of the first batch. Jeffrey Campbell’s “Randy” heel (only $125!)

This wedge-like heel will be perfect for wobbly girls like me, and the black and white pattern is so beautifully versatile. I can’t wait to wear this with red lipstick and nails!

A week’s worth of giving: Treat Thineself

Hi y’all! I’m sure you’re deep in the throes of holiday by now- the wrapping, card-writing, line waiting thrill of it all. And that’s what we’re gonna talk about today. If you’re anything like, uh, everyone I know, you’re probably feeling a little stressed right now. Or a lot. And hey, that’s okay, but it’s also kinda not. If you’re spending all day every day thinking about everyone on your “nice” list, you’re probably not paying any attention to yourself. I’ve been hearing it a lot lately, in the stores: “But I’m supposed to be shopping for other people! ARGH!” Hey, so yeah, totally. But here’s the thing: most of us don’t shop this much the whole year combined. You’re bound to see something yummy that you want, and probably something that wasn’t on your Christmas list, so who’s gonna know to get it for you? Santa?? Nope, you gotta treat yo’self (and if you’re not watching Parks and Rec, consider it my gift to you.) Here’s a few gifts just for you, all under $100. Because Santa is way too busy, and you deserve a lil’ somethin’.

Treat yo’self

Clockwise from top left: lip balm (all kinds of flavors,) Jack Black, $9 @ Manifesto; printed socks, Sweet Marcel, $17 and $22 @both stores; leather chevron earrings, Maya Moon (local!) $32 @ Manifesto; hand-printed scarves (this one has unicorns all over it!) Snoozer Loser, $42 @ both stores; “Sunshine” loafers, Jeffrey Campbell, $99 @ Manifesto.

Also good gifts for: seriously, what did I just say? These are for YOU!

Fun idea: treat yo’self and don’t feel guilty. If you start to feel guilty, drink a hot toddy. Lather, rinse, repeat.

So happy holidays and a merry whatever from The Shoe Crew! Try not to stress out too much!
xoxo,
Sally

A week’s worth of giving: BFFF-style

Hi, and welcome to the final (kinda) installment of my week long, last minute, way-too-specific gift guide! Today is about your best bud, your gal pal. The chick who you can call at 3am when the party gets weird (but in all honesty, she’s probably already there.) She’s your BFFF, and she knows all your secrets, so you better get her something good so she keeps her trap shut.

BFFF (the extra F is NSFW)

Clockwise from top: “Ian” bag, Jeffrey Campbell, $82 @ Manifesto; enameled chevron necklace, Minoux (local!) $218 @ Manifesto; “Strider” boots, J Shoes, $249 @ Manifesto.

Also good gifts for: your regular BFF, college roommate (she might have even better secrets!)

Fun idea: include a tchotchke from your time together, like your favorite book growing up,  or a picture of you both from your prolonged “awkward phase.”

We have a little something extra for you tomorrow, so be sure and check back!
xoxo,
Sally

Nice Bags for Bad Girls

We just got our shipment of bags from Jeffrey Campbell, y’all! They’re from his debut line of bags, inspired by the girls we all hated (but secretly wanted to be) in high school- the cool ones who smoked Marlboro Reds, wore the latest offerings from the mall with great aplomb, and stole your boyfriend with no apology. But make no mistake, these bags offer nothing but good vibes, I promise. See for yourself!

At top: Dial, which is big enough for your homework fashion magazines, make-up, your cigs and has a handle, which is great for running off when you’re cutting class. $150.
Bottom: Ian clutch, with lots of great compartments for your Lisa Frank diary, keys to your dad’s car, a flask… Ya know, the essentials. $85

Now, don’t forget to chew some gum and freshen up before you sneak back in.

xoxo,
Sally
