Style Icon: Bert Fischer, Rushmore

Today, we pay tribute to an unsung hero. To an insightful, loving, fashionable and fictional father and barber: Bert Fischer from the (super amazing) film Rushmore. I know, who woulda thought, right? But the man has a look, and he sticks with it. And for that, he is Bert Fischer, Unexpected Style Icon.

Exhibit A: The man is not only rocking a plaid earflap hat way before it was cool (1998) but he has matched his hat to his thermos. That is super next level! Plus, he is really pulling off the monochrome look. It’s practical, yet stylish. Very now.

Exhibit B: You don’t need an Exhibit B, but here’s a breakdown of his outfit, including a few things you can pick up right here at Manifesto! Hat: Pistil, Boots: Clark Original, Wallets: Property Of.

Who’s your unlikely style icon? Let us know in the comments section!

It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad… Men.

Ever since Mad Men first aired in 2007, men and women alike have gone Mad for the show— the actors, the writing, and of course the costumes! Scientific studies* have shown that, since the show’s premiere 5 years ago, men in general have become approximately 41% more dapper.
If you are not among this 41%, or simply want to step your game up even further, check out some of our fashionable fixins!

May there be a little Don Draper in all of us (but please don’t take that the wrong way!)

Sally

Tuesday Tip:

You don’t have to default to a mandal or a flip flop as the temperature rises, fellas!
Take a look at this gentleman:

A classic suede Desert Boot or Chukka (Don’t know the difference? Click here!) is an the perfect alternative— I mean, they are called Desert Boots. If you’re stumped on how to style them for the bare legs of summer, take a look at this jaunty guy and tell me you couldn’t pull this off with ease! Cooling off is no sweat when you throw on a simple lightweight boot with jean shorts, plus they end up paying for themselves, since you can wear them all year round in Portland!

Date Night!

Being a single gal I go out just about every opportunity possible, lately I have been finding myself on many a first dates(yay… except you caught that right? Many first dates, they don’t seem to stick). Picky you say? Perhaps. In my defense, a gal has to have standards.

One of my dating pet peeves is when the other party does not take a the time to groom himself in a respectable manner (comb hair, polish shoes, iron clothes.) I am not saying go all out like it is prom, but geez, Homie, have some pride in your appearance! The worst offense is looking at said dude’s feet and his shoe game screams “UGLY” (Keens, Tevas, Sketchers, Vibrams, athletic shoes; these shoes have a place but not on a date, and especially not on a first date!)

So what should you wear? Well lemme tell ya! You should show up in a casual yet polished look. One can NEVER go wrong with jeans (no holes, hobo is not sexy!) a button down and beautiful shoes like the “Protect” by Cydwoq:

A good outfit will make all the difference with the pretty lady you are on a date with. Other advice: don’t act desperate or rude, please smell good, and be nice to the waitstaff!

These guys are getting a second date:

Happy dating

Though spring is still but a glimmer in Nature’s eye, we’re all raring to get our ankle-high suede kicks in play. So which ones are “chukkas” and which are “desert boots”? Often used synonymously in modern parlance, these two species of footwear are subtly different. Developed for the British army campaigns in Northern Africa during World War II, the “desert boot” usually has an upper that laces much higher and sits on a crepe sole (a la Clark’s Wallabees). A chukka, on the other hand, is an ankle-high, leather- or rubber-soled boot, with a two- or three-hole lace upper made of calfskin or suede. Originally dubbed Chukkers for their resemblance to Polo boots (after a period of play in Polo called Chukker), the boot’s name comes from the Hindu chakka, ultimately derived from the Sanskrit cakra, meaning ‘wheel.’

Band Of Outsiders Spring 2011

It might not look exactly like Spring outside quite yet, but in the fashion world… well, it’s practically next year already. But let’s start with what comes next!
Soon enough the sun will be shining, the birds will be chirping, and the legs will be bare. Band of Outsiders is one of the few Spring shows that make me excited not only about menswear, but also about getting back into the vitamin d-soaked bliss of Spring.
See for yourself:

With the East Coast, old school preppy vibe (but with a little bit of a grungy side,) topped off with the boat shoes, strapped boots and non-corny ties, it’s no wonder that the label counts indie wunderkind (and onetime look book model) Jason Schwartzman as a fan. Can’t you feel the sun on your face now?

What trends are you looking forward to wearing this Spring (if and when it comes?)
Stay tuned for more of our (belated) Spring runway favorites!

Quality doesn’t mean that things don’t fall apart. It means that things age well, and look good through repeated wash and wear. Most men (myself included) treasure things that can be worn again and again.

My philosophy is: as the face gets worse, the clothes have to get better.
