Style Icon: Bert Fischer, Rushmore

Today, we pay tribute to an unsung hero. To an insightful, loving, fashionable and fictional father and barber: Bert Fischer from the (super amazing) film Rushmore. I know, who woulda thought, right? But the man has a look, and he sticks with it. And for that, he is Bert Fischer, Unexpected Style Icon.

Exhibit A: The man is not only rocking a plaid earflap hat way before it was cool (1998) but he has matched his hat to his thermos. That is super next level! Plus, he is really pulling off the monochrome look. It’s practical, yet stylish. Very now.

Exhibit B: You don’t need an Exhibit B, but here’s a breakdown of his outfit, including a few things you can pick up right here at Manifesto! Hat: Pistil, Boots: Clark Original, Wallets: Property Of.

Who’s your unlikely style icon? Let us know in the comments section!

A week’s worth of giving: Brotherly Love

Hi guys! We’re about halfway through the ultimate, last minute, way-too-specific gift guide! Have YOU finished your holiday shopping yet? Good, because I haven’t even started. I’m okay with that. I work best under pressure. If you have any brother-types, you already know that they can be quite tough to shop for. They’re not like best friends, where you can just get them stuff you want so you can borrow it. Ya know? I know ya know. Here’s a few too-specific gifts to get for your brother who is graduating college. It’s a time in his life when, though he is still young and probably regularly drunk, he needs to start stepping his game up/waking up before 10am/not drinking on Tuesdays/whatever. These gifts toe the line quite nicely, I think.

Brother who is graduating college
Left to right: “Yukon” hat, Pistil (local!) $35 @ Manifesto; St. John’s Bridge wooden cuff links (plus other fun styles,) Frawn (local!) $28 @ Manifesto; assorted socks (No, seriously. If you haven’t seen his socks recently, I can assure you they’re disgusting,) Richer Poorer, $12/ea @ Manifesto.

Also good gifts for: teenage sons, the guy who tutors your teenage son (because his socks are also probably disgusting,) your roommate.

Fun idea: Slip a gift certificate for a free grown up haircut in there, too. He probably needs one. I suggest checking these guys out.

See you tomorrow for more specific gifts!

Style Icon: Ramona Quimby, Age 8

As a big lover of books from my youth (bringing to mind rainy days spent curling up on the couch, finding out what my favorite troublemakers were up to) I am without a doubt influenced by those characters in all areas of my life, especially my style. Maybe it’s not a coincidence that Portland author Beverly Cleary created one of my accidental style icons, Ramona Quimby! That little pest knew how to dress: as many colors and prints and items as felt good, and you can’t go wrong with a good tutu! Here’s a typical Quimby Look:

A comfy, retro baseball tee (so 70s!) tucked into a pair of overalls (not just for kids anymore, y’all, look for them on the runway I swear,) some cute yet practical galoshes (Skerry by Tretorn, we also have black!) to ensure you will be seen as you ride your bike at night, some playful socks (maybe a matching pair, maybe not,) and a toasty, furry, kinda loud, very cool earflap cap (this one is by Pistil.)
See? Warm and boring are not one in the same! Portland is proof-positive of that!

This Saturday, November 6, pedX shoes is excited to host a Winter event with some of your cold day favorites. From 3 to 7, we have Emu (of the cozy boots) and Pistil (of the cozy hats and accessories) in the house for a trunk show!

The event is family friendly, and hot drinks and yummy snacks will be served. Pistil and Emu will both be holding drawings for shoes and hats (must be present to win.)
And as if that wasn’t enough, there will be discounts on all in-store merchandise from the brands, and styles not found in the store will be sold for one night only! This is the perfect opportunity to stock up for the mean winter ahead and get some holiday shopping done.

Hope to see you there!
